Zinc-aluminium and zinc-aluminium-tin alloy coatings represent an advanced category of metallic protective coatings for fasteners used in marine, offshore, and highly corrosive environments. These alloy systems combine the cathodic (sacrificial) protection of zinc with the barrier protection of aluminium, and in some formulations, the surface lubricity enhancement of tin.
Common Zinc-Aluminium Alloy Systems:
• Zn-Al (55% Al, 43.4% Zn, 1.6% Si) — Galvalume / Aluzinc type: Outstanding corrosion resistance — 2–6 times superior to standard zinc; widely used on structural fasteners and sheet metal fixings in coastal environments
• Zn-Al-Mg alloys (ZM coating): Magnesium addition further enhances corrosion resistance, particularly at cut edges and damaged areas; increasingly specified in European automotive and construction
• Zn-Al-Sn alloys: Tin addition provides lubricity and anti-galling properties while maintaining the galvanic protection matrix — suitable for threaded assemblies in marine environments
Application Methods:
- Thermal Spray (TWAS / Flame Spray): Applied to large anchor bolts, foundation bolts, and structural fasteners on-site or in-shop
- Dip Coating: Batch process similar to hot-dip galvanizing but in Zn-Al alloy bath
- Mechanical Plating with Zn-Al Powder: Cold process for high-strength fasteners
