What Are Nylon Lock Nuts?
Nylon Lock Nuts are prevailing torque nuts in which a nylon insert — either a full ring or a partial collar — is bonded or pressed into a recess machined into the top face of the nut. When the nut is threaded onto a bolt, the nylon insert is forced to deform around the bolt thread profile, creating a controlled interference fit that generates a consistent prevailing torque resistant to self-loosening.
The key operating principle is thread interference friction — the deformed nylon grips the bolt thread flanks and resists rotation in the loosening direction without requiring any additional locking elements. This makes Nylon Lock Nuts a single-component locking solution that is faster to install, easier to inspect, and more cost-effective than multi-component locking systems for the vast majority of general industrial applications.
