Electroless Nickel Plating (ENP)

Electroless nickel plating (ENP) is an autocatalytic chemical process in which nickel is deposited onto the fastener surface from a nickel-phosphorus solution without using electrical current. Unlike electroplating, ENP produces a perfectly uniform coating thickness across all geometries — including thread roots, recesses, and blind holes — making it the preferred choice for precision-threaded fasteners where dimensional control is critical.

Asia Bolts Industries sources and applies ENP coatings per client specifications, with options across all three phosphorus grade categories:

ENP Phosphorus Grade Options:

• Low Phosphorus (2–5% P): Highest hardness (HV 600–750 as-plated; up to HV 1100 post heat-treated); magnetic; excellent wear resistance

• Medium Phosphorus (6–9% P): Balance of hardness and corrosion resistance; semi-bright finish; most common grade

• High Phosphorus (10–13% P): Highest corrosion resistance; non-magnetic; amorphous structure; preferred for offshore and chemical process

Key ENP Properties:

• Coating Uniformity: ±1–2 µm across all surfaces (vs ±10–30% variation with electroplating)

• Hardness: HV 500–750 as-plated; up to HV 1000–1100 after heat treatment at 400°C

• Salt Spray: 500–1,000+ hours (high-P grade, 25 µm)

• Operating Temperature: Up to 350°C (low-P); 300°C (high-P without phase change)

• Magnetic Properties: Low-P is magnetic; High-P is non-magnetic

ENP is specified for subsea valve stem bolts, precision instrument fasteners, oil & gas wellhead studs, and bolts used in equipment where dimensional build-up from conventional plating is not acceptable.
