What Are Hex Flange Nuts?

Hex Flange Nuts are hexagonal nuts with a wide circular flange formed integrally on the bearing face of the nut. This flange serves the same function as a flat washer — distributing the compressive clamping force over a larger bearing area on the joint surface — but as a single integrated component, eliminating the separate washer handling, positioning, and potential misalignment issues associated with loose washer assemblies.

They are available in two principal configurations:

Non-Serrated Hex Flange Nuts
A smooth flange underside providing clean, even load distribution without surface marking. Preferred for softer mating materials, painted or coated surfaces, and applications where surface aesthetics matter. Provides washer-replacement functionality without additional vibration resistance beyond the hex nut thread engagement.

Serrated Hex Flange Nuts
The flange underside incorporates concentric or radial serrations — hardened teeth that embed into the mating surface when the nut is tightened. This mechanical interlock provides positive resistance to rotation in the loosening direction under vibration and dynamic loading — effectively combining a hex nut, flat washer, and lock washer into a single fastener component.
