Chrome plating and chromate treatment are two distinct surface finishing processes applied to fasteners, often confused but serving different functions.

Chromate Treatment (Conversion Coating):

Chromate treatment is a chemical conversion coating applied over zinc-plated fasteners (as a passivation step) or directly on aluminium fasteners. It produces a thin (0.5–5 µm) film that significantly improves corrosion resistance and paint adhesion.

  • Hexavalent Chromate (Cr VI): Traditional yellow iridescent finish; excellent corrosion protection; restricted in Europe under RoHS but still permitted for many industrial and defence applications
  • Trivalent Chromate (Cr III): RoHS-compliant alternative; clear or blue-tinted finish; excellent corrosion performance

Decorative Chrome Plating:

Decorative chrome plating involves depositing a thin (0.1–0.5 µm) chrome layer over a nickel undercoat on a copper base layer. The result is a bright, mirror-like finish with excellent hardness and moderate corrosion resistance.

Hard Chrome Plating (Functional Chrome):

• Coating Thickness: 25–500 µm

• Hardness: HV 850–1100

• Application: Fasteners and components requiring extreme wear and abrasion resistance

• Common in hydraulic, aerospace, and heavy machinery fasteners
