Black Oxide
Black oxide (also known as blackening or bluing) is a chemical conversion coating produced by immersing steel fasteners in a hot alkaline solution containing oxidising salts at 135–145°C, forming a thin magnetite (Fe₃O₄) layer of 1–2 microns thickness that bonds integrally with the steel surface. Black oxide provides minimal corrosion protection in isolation — typically only 72 hours salt spray — and requires supplementary oil or wax treatment to be effective in any corrosive environment. Its primary value is aesthetic: the matte black surface eliminates light reflection, provides a uniform appearance for visible mechanical assemblies, and offers dimensional neutrality — the 1–2 micron coating thickness has no effect on thread fit or dimensional tolerances. Black oxide is suitable for indoor mechanical components, tooling, instrumentation and equipment assemblies where appearance and anti-galling are the primary drivers, not corrosion protection.
