What Are Square Nuts?

Square Nuts are internally threaded fasteners with a four-sided (square) external profile rather than the conventional six-sided hexagonal form. The square profile delivers three key performance advantages over standard hex nuts in specific application contexts:

Anti-Rotation Without Tooling
When embedded in timber, seated in a T-slot channel, or located in a pre-cut square recess in a panel or casting, the flat sides of the square nut bear directly against the surrounding material — preventing the nut from rotating when the bolt is tightened or removed, without requiring a second spanner or rear-side access. This self-locking-against-rotation characteristic makes Square Nuts essential for timber joinery, T-bolt channel assemblies, and through-bolt connections in timber frame construction.

Wider Bearing Surface
The four flat sides of a Square Nut provide a larger bearing footprint on the mating surface than a hex nut of equivalent thread size — distributing the compressive clamping load over a greater area and reducing surface stress. This is particularly beneficial on softer mating materials including timber, aluminium extrusions, composite panels, and plastics where hex nut bearing face imprint and pull-through are concerns.

T-Slot Channel Compatibility

Types of Square Nuts Available

2. Thin Square Nut — DIN 562

3. Square Weld Nut
A square nut with four welding projections (or a flat base) on the bearing face for resistance or projection welding directly onto steel plates, sheet metal panels, and structural frames — creating a permanent, flush-mounted threaded boss that accepts a bolt from the front face only. Widely used in automotive body fabrication, electrical enclosure manufacture, and structural panel assembly where rear-side access is unavailable after welding.

4. Square T-Slot Nut
A precision-dimensioned square nut with body width and height matched to a specific T-slot aluminium extrusion profile (e.g. 20-series, 40-series, 45-series, 80-series) — designed to slide into the T-slot channel and lock in position when tightened.
