Black oxide provides minimal corrosion protection in isolation \u2014 typically only 72 hours salt spray \u2014 and requires supplementary oil or wax treatment to be effective in any corrosive environment. Its primary value is aesthetic: the matte black surface eliminates light reflection, provides a uniform appearance for visible mechanical assemblies, and offers dimensional neutrality \u2014 the 1\u20132 micron coating thickness has no effect on thread fit or dimensional tolerances.
